World Habitat Day is set for October 2 this year. World Habitat Day is observed on the first Monday of October each year, and the day serves as a time to reflect on the state of adequate shelter available worldwide. At Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton this means recognizing our work to improve living conditions in Dayton Ohio and Guatemala.
Dayton Habitat is one affiliate in the international Habitat community. Each year we tithe to our partner affiliate, Habitat for Humanity Guatemala. In the last 11 years, Dayton Habitat has supported families in Guatemala with nearly $1 million in financial contributions. These contributions have helped build earthquake resistant houses, repair existing homes, provide services to individuals with disabilities and more. Our efforts to help our Guatemalan affiliate are just one way that Dayton Habitat strives to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope.
At home in Dayton, we have been able build over 340 homes and repair over 250 in 40 years. Whether it is an international project or one in our backyard, it is our hope that we can create a world in which everyone has a decent place to live.
