Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton, in partnership with the University of Dayton School of Business Administration, is excited to announce a dedication ceremony for the Flyer Nation Build on Friday, October 11. After months of hard work, Aliciah and her children will be able to step foot into their new home in the Edgemont community. The home marks the first new build in this community in over 50 years.
Aliciah’s dreams of homeownership will become a reality when she closes on her first home through Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton. Dayton Habitat makes homeownership possible for individuals like Aliciah by selling homes with a 0% interest mortgage. This unique program requires future homebuyers to complete homeownership courses and contribute a minimum of 275 “sweat equity” volunteer hours prior to purchasing their home.
The Flyer Nation Build was made possible through a special partnership with the University of Dayton School of Business Administration. The collaboration began in the Fall of 2023 when the university was looking for a large-scale service project for their students. Dayton Habitat answered the call by engaging over 500 incoming business freshmen in a panel build event. The walls for the Flyer Nation Build were built during this event which took place during move-in weekend.
“At UD, our students embrace the call to serve from day one,” said School of Business Administration Dean Trevor Collier. “Our business students engage in meaningful community work throughout their undergraduate careers. These experiences help them see their careers as a calling, deeply connected to their communities.”
The Flyer Nation Build gained support not only from students and faculty, but by a variety of community partners. In addition to the University of Dayton, the build was sponsored by Fifth Third Bank, Five Rivers Health Centers, The City of Dayton, The Greater Edgemont Community Coalition, and Fischer Homes. These organizations, dedicated to improving their local community, saw Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton as the ideal partner to help achieve this shared goal.
“The partnership between the University of Dayton and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton seemed like a perfect fit,” Elizabeth Breitenstein, Market President for Fischer Homes Dayton Division, stated. “Fischer Homes is committed to building a better community by supporting and uplifting our neighborhoods. We are so excited to see this recent project come together!”
“The outpouring of support we have seen for Aliciah and this build has been outstanding,” Norman Miozzi, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton, explained. “The dedication of this home will be a celebration of not only Aliciah’s hard work but also the community spirit that made it possible.”
Aliciah’s journey to homeownership has been one of resilience and determination. Balancing two jobs—working in a busy warehouse and as a hotel housekeeper—she has shown unwavering commitment to securing a stable home for her family. For Aliciah, this home represents more than just a place to live; it’s a foundation for her family’s future and a place where their dreams can grow.
