Lakeisha, a lifelong Dayton resident, first learned about Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton through a friend and quickly realized it was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up! A dedicated school bus driver for Dayton Public Schools for over ten years, hair stylist, and former group home employee, Lakeisha has a deep commitment to serving the community, building relationships with new people, and bringing positive energy into every space she’s in. She is raising her two daughters to do the same, working daily to provide for them. Now, thanks to her partnership with Dayton Habitat, she will soon purchase her first home with a 0% interest mortgage.
Za’Hira, 16, is a driven and vibrant teen who shines both in and out of school. Passionate about social studies, she dreams of someday becoming a criminal justice lawyer. Her sister Zuri, 2, is vocal and polite, bringing smiles wherever she goes. She loves watching Cocomelon and all the bright, fun colors from the show.
This new home is not just a space for the girls to grow; it is a place where they can feel space. Despite her optimism, Lakeisha’s current living situation presents real challenges: heavy alley traffic that makes it unsafe for the kids to play outside, essential home repairs left unfinished, and serious safety concerns leave the family wanting stability.
After moving frequently over the years, Lakeisha chose to apply to Dayton Habitat not only to create a safer environment for her family but also to strengthen her bond within her community. Through Dayton Habitat’s program, families must contribute a minimum of 275 sweat equity volunteer hours and attend homeownership classes. Lakeisha’s time in the program has been truly life-changing. From new recipes to a chance to get involved, Dayton Habitat is not just offering her a chance at homeownership, it is giving her family the space they need to grow, thrive, and create a bright future together.
