When Susan purchased her home in 2009, she never imagined that the upstairs shower would fail and remain unusable for more than 15 years. For over a decade, the only option was a small, dimly lit stand-up shower in the basement. After undergoing surgery, navigating the steep stairs became dangerous. Every step carried the fear of slipping, falling, and getting seriously hurt, yet it was the only way she could bathe. Something as basic as taking a shower became an exhausting, risky task.
Everything changed when MVP and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton completed a full bathroom remodel through the Critical Home Repair program. The new accessible bathroom has transformed her everyday life.
“It has made life so much easier. I feel safe now taking a shower. I don’t have to go downstairs anymore and risk getting hurt. I have so much room now, and I feel cleaner. You don’t know how much of a blessing that is.”
For the first time in years, she can shower comfortably and independently in her own home, without fear.
“It’s a blessing from God. Habitat is a blessing from God. I never dreamed of something like this. I just keep thanking God, and I’m thanking you guys too.”
Today, Susan stands in her new bathroom with gratitude and pride, thankful for the dignity, safety, and peace of mind that have been restored. Dayton Habitat and MVP’s work did more than repair a shower, it repaired confidence, comfort, and quality of life.
