Originally from Newark, Gwendolyn came to Dayton looking for a fresh start to create something new for herself and her 8-year-old granddaughter. When she called 211 for housing support, she learned about Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton. Despite hearing there could be a long waitlist, she took a leap of faith and applied. Now, Gwendolyn is close to the end of her journey to homeownership!
A former employee at Miami Valley Head Start, Gwendolyn retired due to severe arthritis. Through Dayton Habitat, she’s gaining more than just a house; she’s gaining the ability to live independently in a space that works for her. Her current apartment has stairs, making daily life challenging. She often has to roll items down the steps or ask for help. The thought of having a home with no stairs brings her peace and renewed strength.
During her sweat equity volunteer hours, Gwendolyn enjoyed helping at the Springfield ReStore and discovering all the unique donations that came through the doors. She says volunteering keeps her moving and motivated. The homeowner education classes have also been eye-opening, helping her embrace the responsibilities of being her “own landlord” and the importance of open communication.
A woman of deep faith, Gwendolyn is a prayer facilitator, Bible study teacher, and retired jail chaplain from Clark County Jail. Her dedication to service is something she carries into every part of her life, and she’s excited to bring that same heart into her new home.
Rileyanna, 8, is full of creativity and already dreaming big. She loves art and hopes to become a doctor one day.
Thanks to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton, Gwendolyn has the opportunity to purchase her home with a 0% interest mortgage, finally giving her the safe, accessible, and stable housing she needs to thrive.
Help us welcome her home on Friday, December 12! More information is available here!
