On Tuesday, May 13, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton was presented the Better Business Bureau's Community Honor Award. The Community Honor Award was established in 2011 to recognize government, nonprofit, or education organizations with a proven commitment to improving all aspects of life in the Miami Valley. The award showcases the overall impact an organization has in the Miami Valley community.
Since 1983, Dayton Habitat has been building homes in Montgomery, Clark, and Greene Counties. These homes are sold to qualifying partner families with a 0% interest mortgage. In order to qualify for this unique approach to homeownership, families must make between 30-60% median income, be willing to partner with a minimum of 275 sweat equity volunteer hours per adult and attend homeownership courses. The result of their commitment is the opportunity to purchase their new home!
After the 2019 Memorial Day tornadoes, the organization expanded its services to include a critical repair program. This program offers repairs such as roof replacements, bathroom modifications, new water heaters and furnaces, and handicap ramp installations at no charge to the homeowner. Today, the organization serves over 100 families a year through critical repairs alone.
In addition to serving local families, Dayton Habitat offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. Individuals can volunteer on the build site to learn new skills in constructing a new house or at one of the organization's ReStore locations. No experience is necessary, making it the perfect opportunity for teambuilding and workforce development.
Through the years, Dayton Habitat has built strong partnerships with local companies and institutions like the University of Dayton, Synchrony, Wright Patt Credit Union, Reynolds & Reynolds, the City of Dayton, Liberty High School, YouthBuild Dayton, and more! These partnerships showcase Dayton Habitat's commitment to building homes, communities, and hope.
