Why was a Raider Nation Build an excellent idea for a Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton branded build? Unscripted, one by one, speakers from the city, local stakeholders, university reps, Habitat staff, and even board members gave the answer at the recent theme build kickoff event in New Carlisle: “I’m a Wright State grad.”

Wright State University alumni and students represent a large footprint in the Miami Valley and have for the last 60-plus years. That explains why this Dayton Habitat build in New Carlisle is already off to a great start. The university’s athletic department, Wright Patt Credit Union, and the Clark County Land Bank are the main sponsors for the home being built for Charlotte and her family to purchase through our zero-interest mortgage program.

“This is a great partnership for her family,” said Clark County Commissioner Charles Patterson, a WSU alum. “And it is great to see all of these community builders come together to create a great foundation for today and in the future.”

Wright State Athletic Director Joy Lynn Brown spoke proudly about a prior spring day when over 100 Wright State student-athletes and their friends braved less-than-ideal conditions to build the panels that will be used in Charlotte’s home. She said it made a big impression on her and her students.

Add Habitat's long-time Development Director and WSU grad David Mauch to those on whom this project has already made a big impression.

“When I got to Wright State, I was a kid, and when I left, I was an adult,” he said. “I think about the power of partnership. Those student-athletes didn’t have to be there; it was all volunteer. There’s something about the collaboration that was really special. When all of us come together, we can make great things happen.”

Long-time sponsor Wright-Patt Credit Union Director of Community Impact and Development Ivy Glover knows well the impact of this kind of community investment.

“The more we can get families into homes of their own, the better our community will be,” said Ivy, also a Habitat board member. And yes, a WSU grad. Then she addressed Charlotte directly: “I am proud as a mom, Raider, board member, and Wright-Patt employee to be a part of projects like this. We are literally and figuratively laying the foundation for your family.”

Charlotte was overwhelmed with thankfulness. “I want to thank God for the blessings and everyone for the work they have all done for us,” she said.
