Katherine’s dream of becoming a homeowner began with a spark of inspiration from her sister, who built a house from the ground up. Seeing her sister's success fueled Katherine’s determination to create a stable and beautiful home for herself and her son. Despite challenges, she continued to hope for a place of her own where she could eventually retire. Now, because of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton, her dream is about to become a reality.
Katherine works as a peer professional but has a history of working for the Dayton Public School District. Her career involves a variety of experiences, including 12 years of substituting and many more years working in the special education department. Her passion for her students and their growth is evident in her daily interactions and unwavering commitment. Katherine comes from a large extended family, but her world revolves around her son. A talented drummer, her son brings joy and rhythm to their lives, especially when he plays for their church.
This new home represents more than just a physical space for Katherine’s family; it is a dream come true. They are looking forward to living in a safe environment where the fear of gunshots is a thing of the past. Katherine envisions a space of her own where she can indulge in her love for painting. Although it may seem like a small thing, a convenient space to do laundry at home is another thing she is excited about having in her new home.
Katherine’s journey with Habitat for Humanity has been transformative. The homeownership courses have not only prepared her for this new chapter but also inspired her to get involved in the Dayton community. She found the finance classes to be very helpful and is planning on taking additional classes to gain a deeper understanding of her taxes. She is deeply grateful for the opportunity and the immense support from Habitat for Humanity.
With immense gratitude and excitement, Katherine looks forward to buying her dream home and creating lasting memories in a place she can truly call her own.
