On October 18, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton had the honor of hosting representatives from Habitat for Humanity Guatemala, who traveled to Dayton to share their mission and the incredible impact they’ve made in their country. Over the past 45 years, Habitat Guatemala has touched the lives of more than one million people, helping families build safer, healthier futures.
In addition to serving hundreds of families locally each year, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton also supports communities abroad in small but meaningful ways. Through tithing, Dayton Habitat was able to contribute to the construction of four new homes, 36 healthy home kits, and 63 concrete floors in the past year alone.
Habitat Guatemala offers a variety of programs to address urgent housing needs, beyond their traditional homeownership program. These initiatives include pouring concrete floors, installing smokeless stoves, and providing access to clean water through filters. Through 2028, the affiliate has committed to pouring over 20,000 concrete floors annually, which is a key part of improving health outcomes for families. Dirt floors are often associated with health issues, and Habitat’s efforts are helping to create cleaner, safer living environments for families across the country.
Martha Chavez, one of the many homeowners impacted by Habitat Guatemala, shared her heartfelt gratitude: “Now when I make my tortillas, I don’t have to be on my knees. I can stand next to the stove without my back or legs hurting.” With the installation of smokeless stoves, families can safely prepare meals, reducing the risk of burns and improving overall well-being.
Looking ahead, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton is excited to explore the possibility of sending volunteers to serve alongside their Guatemalan counterparts through the Global Village program. Stay tuned for more information on this incredible opportunity to make a difference abroad.
