Meet Len, Alicia & Their Family

Homeownership has been a long-standing dream for Len and Alicia, a dream that—until recently—felt like it might never be realized. Since relocating from California to Huber Heights with their two children, Ben and Gabby, they have longed for a safe, comfortable space to call their own. For over eight years, their son Benjamin has been sleeping on the living room couch in their small two-bedroom rental. With limited space and growing children, the need for a permanent, spacious home became increasingly urgent.

Len, a proud U.S. Navy veteran who served aboard the U.S.S. Independence during the Vietnam War, has faced his share of battles both on and off the battlefield. His exposure to Agent Orange led to serious health complications. Medical expenses strained the family’s finances, setting back their plans for homeownership. But Len is a fighter—now in remission and focused on regaining his strength, he’s ready to turn the page to a brighter chapter.

It was by chance that Len and Alicia came across an article about Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton. Curious, they reached out to learn more. To their surprise and joy, they discovered Habitat’s unique approach to homeownership through partnering and offering 0% interest mortgages.

Eager to embrace the opportunity, Len and Alicia threw themselves into the process, completing every required step with enthusiasm. As lifelong learners, they particularly appreciated the homeownership education classes, finding the nutrition course especially valuable. They’ve used what they learned to foster healthier habits and instill practical life skills in their children.

The couple’s dedication to bettering their lives has always gone hand-in-hand with serving others. For years, the family has volunteered together at other organizations. Through this work, Len and Alicia have modeled the values of service, gratitude, and compassion—principles they strive to pass on to their children.

Their kids, Ben and Gabby, are thriving students who love playing basketball and are eagerly looking forward to having their own rooms in the new house. The move means more than just space—it’s a fresh start, a quiet place to study, a home where each family member can grow.

Thanks to the support of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton, that long-awaited dream is finally within reach.

“We are more than grateful for this opportunity,” Len and Alicia share. “Being selected as a Habitat Family Partner has changed our lives!”
